Psalm 1:1- Blessed is the man, who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers.
1:2- But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on these laws he meditates day and night.
1:3- He/She shall be as a tree, planted by the rivers/streams of water, which yields its fruit in its due season. His leaves shall not wither, and in whatever she/he does, he prospers.
This is the first ever psalm. One of only about 56 written by David himself whom God held dear to Himself and called, “a man after my heart”.
Let me explain this: It has been said, time and time again, that since most of the rules of the Old Testament are no longer to be followed(except for the 10 commandments obviously), the only rules, + the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20, that must now be followed are these simple two:
i) Love the Lord with all thy heart, thy soul, thy body and every day, thy praise.
ii) Love thy neighbour as thou lovest thyself (also known to many, me included, as the Golden Rule).
The first commandment simply means, that in everything that you do, in everything that you think, in everything that you say, act or even attempt to do, FOLLOW GOD’S GUIDELINES!
The Bible might have been written before our great-great-great-great grandfathers x30 were born, but which one of us can deny that everytime they’ve read and meditated on the bible in their lives, they’ve never felt peace, never had contentment, never felt God’s love?
With everything we do, we have an opportunity to either be good ambassadors for Christ or wonderful ambassadors for the kingdom of darkness. Sure, if we repent and ask for his forgiveness, he is and will be faithful and just enough to bestow it to us, but shall we continue in sin and expect the grace of the Lord to abound? Certainly NOT!.
Will you choose to stand up for God in your actions today? Will you keep in mind the sacrifices that the Lord has bestowed upon the entirely too fallible human race and then choose to be a shining, guiding light to this terrible human race? Or will you choose to hide your light under a basket of complaints.
I’ll tell you a secret that I’ve discovered, reading my Bible. This is it: The devil is a bully. He’s a very big bully. And as anyone who has dealt with any kind of bully before, physical bully or emotional bully, bullies quail when you stand up to them. They flounder and they die. Or slink back into their corners to cry, hide or plot your destruction.
You cannot take on the bully alone, you need Jesus Christ of Nazareth. One more thing I learnt from reading my Bible that you need to know before you make a concrete decision on whether or not to stand for God and thus antagonize the principalities and powers working for him; is this: The Devil HATES HUMANS WITH A PASSION! He does, he truly, really does. See when the earth was created, man was given dominion over the earth and everything in it. And the devil was cast out for disobeying God.
Misery adores having company. So the devil attempted to make man and God angry with each other and he used US. He used sin. And then he got control of the world. He wrested dominion from man and began tormenting us regularly, with our own fallible natures. What he did not count on, was that God would send his only son, His precious Jewel, who had never sinned against him, against anyone, to come save us, even while WE continued to sin against him. Jesus was with us only a short while, but as a very intelligent person told me once, in that short while, he left a mark, with God’s help, that we’re still celebrating even now. That means that if you just use the tools the Lord Jesus left at your disposal before he went up into heaven, you can accomplish all that God wants you to accomplish. These are the tools:
a) The Holy Spirit(I love you Holy Spirit).
b) The Name of Jesus (remember that song- at the mention of YOUR name, every knee shall bow, at the mention of GOD’S name, every tongue shall confess. The Name is a very powerful tool, trust me. Test it out every day in prayer. Challenge God to do something new in your life, and expect that thing in faith. Standing on God’s name, you cannot fail. Ever! James 1:5-8.)
c) The Word of God. That Bible we only feel that we need to read on Sundays (and in some cases, just on Sunday mornings), GOD has said that he honours it even above his name. Confess a positive part of the Bible to yourself every morning, every time that you’re sick, every time that you’re scared, every time you feel that God has abandoned you. Confess it. Speak his word back to him, for God himself, is in THAT word. He’s in that positive verse you choose to speak, in that negative verse that you use to pray against the forces of darkness. So confess his word. Speak to HIM what he has said. Apply it to your situation. And HE will hear. Oh, he has promised you, that if you ask anything according to his perfect will and in his name and using his word, HE WILL HEAR YOU. My favourite word to speak back to God, is Jeremiah 29:11- For HE KNOWS THE PLANS THAT FOR ME ( insert your own name), PLANS OF GOOD AND NOT OF EVIL, TO BRING ME TO THE END HE HAS MAPPED OUT FOR ME. Or Deuteronomy 28:1-13. Or Job, Chapter 22 verse 28 & 29. Speaking God’s word gives you armour against the wiles of the  devil. It gives you everything that you need.
d) THE BLOOD OF JESUS: Self explanatory. It washes our sins, it is the symbol of God’s  NEW TESTAMENT covenant with us, it heals our diseases- By HIS stripes, all of us are healed. Say Amen!
Christians these days don’t know God as HE TRULY is. Boko Haram, school, work, stress, and so many other issues conspire to rob us of God’s perfect peace and joy and promises. Hold on to God. Hold on to HIS promises. Stand firm with all vestiges of your control, set fear aside. Live for God. And he will work so mightily on your own behalf.
